Biodentine for Deep Cavities: What to Expect

Maybe you’ve just been told you have a deep cavity.

Or perhaps your dentist mentioned Bioceramic material – Biodentine as an option, and you went home wondering:

What exactly is that? Why do I need it? And does this mean something is seriously wrong with my tooth?

First, having a deep cavity doesn’t automatically tell us what treatment your tooth will need.

At Designing Beautiful Smiles in Sunrise, Florida, we look carefully at how much of the tooth is affected and, importantly, whether the living tissue inside can still be protected.

In some cases, Biodentine can help us do that.

What Happens During Biodentine Treatment?

When treating a deep cavity, we first carefully remove the decay and evaluate the tooth.

Deep inside every tooth is the pulp, which contains its nerves and blood vessels. When decay gets close to this area, our goal is to determine whether that living tissue is healthy enough to preserve.

If it is, Biodentine may be placed in the deeper portion of the tooth to replace damaged dentin and help protect the pulp.

Because Biodentine is bioactive, it interacts with the tooth and can support the formation of mineralized tissue and the tooth’s natural protective response.

The tooth is then restored so you can continue using it normally.

Can Biodentine Help Me Avoid a Root Canal?

This is one of the most important questions patients ask us.

And the answer is: in certain cases, Biodentine can be part of a treatment designed to keep the pulp alive and potentially avoid root canal treatment.

This approach is known as vital pulp therapy.

However, Biodentine isn’t a substitute for a root canal when the pulp is already irreversibly inflamed or infected.

That’s why evaluating the tooth first is so important. Our goal isn’t to avoid a root canal at all costs. It’s to avoid removing healthy, living tissue when it can safely be preserved.

Is Biodentine the Same as a Regular Filling?

Not exactly.

A traditional filling restores tooth structure that has been lost to decay.

Biodentine can be used deeper inside the tooth as a substitute for damaged dentin. What makes it especially interesting is its bioactivity — it doesn’t simply occupy the space.

Depending on your particular tooth and treatment, another restorative material may be used along with Biodentine to complete the restoration.

How Do I Know If Biodentine Is Right for My Cavity?

Every cavity is different.

The depth of the decay, your symptoms, the condition of the pulp, and how much healthy tooth remains all help us decide on the right approach.

This is why I believe strongly in looking at the individual tooth rather than automatically applying the same treatment to every patient.

Sometimes the simplest treatment is the right one. Sometimes more extensive care is necessary. And sometimes modern materials like Biodentine give us an opportunity to preserve something we might otherwise lose.

If you have been diagnosed with a deep cavity and are searching for a dentist near me or exploring conservative cavity treatment in Sunrise, come talk to us.

We’ll show you what we see, explain your options in simple language, and help you understand why we are recommending a particular treatment.

Because when we have an opportunity to preserve your natural tooth, I believe it’s worth exploring.
