Tooth Extraction

What Is A Tooth Extraction?

Extracting a tooth involves fully removing it from the mouth. This is done as a way to remove teeth that are beyond the point of being saved as well as taking them out when they pose a risk to your future oral health. Our goal is to perform extractions in our office in a comfortable and painless manner. We can then work on ways to replace the tooth, if applicable, once it’s been extracted.

Why Might A Tooth Extraction Be Needed?

The most common reason for needing to have a tooth extracted is because it’s been severely damaged or is badly decayed. The tooth is typically beyond the point of being saved, so removing it is the best option. Some patients request that a tooth be removed to avoid more complicated procedures, like root canals. You might need to have an extraction done if you have impacted wisdom teeth or have a child who has one or more stubborn baby teeth.

Who Is A Candidate For A Tooth Extraction?

The best way for us to determine if a tooth extraction is needed is with an examination. This allows us to see if a tooth is damaged or decayed enough to warrant taking it out. If at all possible, we will recommend ways to preserve the tooth so that it does not need to be extracted. This procedure can be done on both pediatric as well as adult patients.

What Happens During A Tooth Extraction?

We start the process by administering an anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. We offer sedation dentistry as well for those who would rather be asleep or more relaxed during their appointment. We then loosen and lift the tooth out of its underlying socket. This is a quick and painless process that is done in just a matter of seconds. The gums may need sutures depending on your unique needs. You’ll bite down on gauze to stop all bleeding and will be provided with detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth while it’s healing.
