What Are Root Canals?
A root canal is a restorative procedure that involves removing the pulp from inside of a tooth. The pulp houses both the nerves and blood supply that are crucial in keeping the tooth healthy. If the pulp becomes infected by decay or has been damaged in some way, it’ll need to be removed. The reason the pulp has to be removed after it’s been compromised is because it can cause both severe pain and sensitivity.
Why Might Root Canals Be Needed?
A root canal is typically needed if a tooth has become badly decayed to the point of infecting the pulp. If a tooth has cracked or broken, the inner pulp might have been damaged or left entirely exposed. Most patients who need a root canal will experience severe pain as well as sensitivity to both hot and cold temperature extremes. You may not be able to put pressure on the tooth without it causing excruciating pain.
Who Is A Candidate For Root Canals?
The best way for us to determine if a root canal is needed is with both an exam and an x-ray. The exam allows us to look for damage and decay while the x-ray enables us to see if the pulp has been damaged in any way. If you need a root canal, it is a good idea to have the procedure done as soon as possible. This prevents further problems with the tooth and eliminates the pain that you’re currently experiencing.
What Happens During The Root Canal Procedure?
We begin by numbing a specific area of your mouth with a safe local anesthetic. We then place a rubber dental dam over the top of the tooth to keep it isolated. This dental dam will help to prevent bacteria and saliva from entering the tooth while it is being worked on. We then remove all decay from the tooth and take out the inside pulp. The canals of the roots are thoroughly cleaned and then filled with a specialty dental material. The tooth is closed and you’ll be ready to leave the office without the pain and sensitivity you had when coming in.
