Inlays and Onlays

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Both inlays and onlays are designed to improve the look and quality of your teeth. Teeth rather crack and become damaged in a perfect, uniform way. In some cases, the crack may run along the top of a tooth or a tooth might only slightly break off or chip. In this case, either an inlay or onlay restoration can be placed.

Why might Inlays and Onlays be needed?

There are a few reasons for why you might need either an inlay or an onlay. You might have a tooth that has a crack along the top of it or one that’s broken only on the very top. Likewise, a tooth might have a large filling in it or a larger area of decay. In any case, this type of restoration is customized to fit over the tooth and provide restorative and aesthetic benefits.

Who is a candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

The best way for us to determine if you might need either an inlay or onlay is with an examination. The exam gives us a clear view of the teeth that are damaged or if older restorations need to be replaced. The reason some of our patients request inlays and onlays is because of how durable and lasting they are. Most of these restorations can last for decades before needing to be replaced.

What happens during the procedure for Inlays and Onlays?

We begin by smoothing and buffing the damaged tooth. If there is decay or old filling material present, we remove this completely. We then take impressions and use these molds to make the new inlay or onlay. The inlay or onlay is then placed over the tooth and adhered to last for many years. It is important that you brush the new restoration as you would your natural teeth and to be careful when flossing around the tooth. If the inlay or onlay begins to show signs of wear, we can remove and replace it easily in our office.
