What Is Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry?
Sedation is a great way for you to feel relaxed while undergoing dental treatment. It is not uncommon to suffer panic and anxiety attacks when in the dental office. Unfortunately, if this fear is keeping you from receiving the care that you need, it is time to consider sleep dentistry. Sedation is safe for patients of all ages, and we have several different options available to you.
Why Would Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry Be Needed?
The reason you might need or want sedation dentistry is because you have a hard time sitting still in the dental chair or have been putting off care because of anxiety and fear. If you’re undergoing a more complex procedure, we’ll typically recommend sedation as a way to improve your comfort during the appointment. Sedation is ideal for patients who have mental or physical disabilities and need to be asleep or fully relaxed in order for work to be done.
Who Is A Candidate For Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry?
Most of our patients are good candidates for sleep dentistry. The reason for this is because we carefully administer and monitor sedation at all times while it is in use. We will review your health and medical history to determine if sedation is right for your needs. During your consultation appointment, we will go over the different options that we have available in our office.
What Happens During The Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry Process?
Before undergoing any type of sedation, we will go over your health and medical history. For lighter sedation, we recommend either oral sedation or nitrous oxide. Oral sedation involves taking a pill before your appointment that will deeply relax and calm you down. Nitrous oxide is a small mask placed over your nose that is designed to relax you while treatment is being done. IV sedation is best for our patients undergoing complex surgeries or who have trouble sitting still for their appointments.
